Stage Light Show
Prompt: To design and fabricate lights to enhance client’s stage show
Tools & Skills: Product design, industrial design, fabrication, laser cutting, adobe illustrator, usability, physical computing, prototyping
Actually, the prompt went something more like: “Hey guys can you, like, screw some light bulbs into some cheap slabs of wood and make them kinda flash with the music while we’re on stage?” My design partner (Chip Beck) and I said no, we’ll make you something a little bit nicer and more durable. Having become a seasoned laser cutter, I decided to design modern, minimalist lights out of acrylic. We tested a few different variations of translucence to see how each would disperse light, settling on frosted white. The sleek rectangular shape of the design is meant to lend itself well to excessive traveling during a tour. The acrylic pieces are stabilized by a small wooden brick at its base so that it could screw it into camera tripods that the band/crew could easily assemble and disassemble for each show. We used sticky LED strip lights that could be programmed in RGB for its wider color range, which Chip then programmed in Abelton Live to sync with the music’s backing tracks.
Lights are also featured in the band’s video for Sepia, below. (First spotted around 1:20 mark)
What’d I learn????
How to make use of different mediums (media?) together to maximize usability in industrial design
That physical experience design is a cool way to learn about usability
